The survey reveals that gardeners predominantly favor a balanced approach to shopping, with 45.39% utilizing both independent garden centers (IGCs) and big box retailers. This trend indicates a preference for the variety and expertise of IGCs, blended with the pricing and convenience of larger stores. However, a notable 29.75% lean towards shopping primarily or exclusively at big box retailers, underscoring the appeal of cost and accessibility.
In 2024, while most gardeners (60.22%) maintained their usual shopping habits, a significant shift is seen towards IGCs (23.6%), possibly driven by a desire for quality and uniqueness in plant varieties. On the other hand, 16.18% have tilted more towards big box retailers, suggesting varying preferences and priorities among gardeners.
The key factors influencing these shifts include ‘Plant Varieties’ and ‘Prices’, both scoring over 50%, followed closely by ‘Convenience’. ‘Customer Service’ and supporting local businesses are also crucial considerations, reflecting gardeners’ appreciation for personalized service and community values. This data paints a nuanced picture of the modern gardener’s shopping dynamics and preferences.
